600sqft Off Grid Houseboat Built For Full Time Living

Take a look at this 600 square foot off grid house boat. You could live full time on this houseboat, completely 100% off grid and self sufficient. This houseboat is is Seattle, Washington, USA, and looks like it would be a great little river, lake, or bay boat as long as you didn’t get into too heavy seas you could live aboard this and stay completely disconnected from the grid. Add in some satellite internet, a big screen TV, and you have Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu ready to go. This is off grid glamping on the water at it’s best.

Take a look at this absolutely gorgeous interior. Absolutely beautiful woodwork and it looks very homey and comfortable. Most boat look and are pretty cramped and there’s not a lot of open space except out on the deck. This makes use of the space very well, and has finish wood interior that just makes this look like and off grid cabin on the water.

The houseboat measure about 15 by 40 feet exterior. In nautical terms it’s got a 15′ beam width and a length of 40′, giving your a total footprint of about 600 square feet, of which there’s a 5×14 foot back deck. It’s a got a 4 burner propane stove for cooking and a wood stove for heat. It’s got a nice bathroom (called a “head” on a boat) with toilet and tiled shower. You likely won’t be crossing the ocean in this vessel, but you could live aboard and go from port to port, up rivers, and stay in the bay areas and live the off grid life, on the water.

Here’s a video tour of the boat.

All in all I think this is a great idea for an off grid solution.

Add in some solar panels, a wind turbine or two and a battery backup, maybe a 200-300HP electric motor from a car to power the craft and you’re all set for living off the grid on the water. What a unique and fascinating idea. I’ve seen a few boats like this, some catamarans and some tiny house/shacks built on pontoons that serve as off grid cabins on the water. This might be something to think about later on if the world goes to heck in a hand basket.

Oh, and for the zombie apocalypse enthusiasts out there…zombies can’t swim. So, you’ll be safe from zombies! This could be your zombie apocalypse survival boat. 😉

In all seriousness though, I’m seeing this as a viable option for a lot of folks looking to move off grid as land prices are going up. Many people can’t afford to buy off grid land. If you can’t afford $150k for a 40 acre parcel of land, maybe spend $50k to $75k and build yourself a very nice off grid houseboat like this one.

You could have your own waterfront off grid cabin!

That sounds GREAT!
