This amazing solar powered shipping container home is completely off the grid and sits on a 23 acre parcel of land in the middle of a nature preserve in New Zealand, which is part of preserving this land for future generations. This is off grid living at its finest, with all the creature comforts of home, in the middle of an absolutely gorgeous natural setting, and solar powered. You couldn’t ask for anything better. Stunning!

Here’s a video tour: More information below the video.

Solar Power System

The shipping container home is completely powered by a 4kw 12 solar panel solar power system with a battery backup system.

Water System

2 25,000 liter plastic water tanks (66oo gallon tanks), and a worm composting septic system.

The home is 100% completely off the grid and provides everything any need to live off the grid. No water bill. No power bill. Completely self-reliant.

An Amazing Kitchen!

She picked out some tool boxes for kitchen cabinetry and it really goes with the industrial and commercial kitchen look and feel and offers plenty of storage space for utensils, pots and pans and other dining ware. All the cabinetry only cost about $3k. Not bad considering professional contractors would charge something like $10k-$20k for something like this!

Heating with a wood stove.

Composting toilet goes into the worm composting system.

The house cost is up there, around $450k  NZD (New Zealand Dollar) or about $308k USD.

This is a retirement home, no doubt you’d have to save for a long time to build something like this. However, there are ways to cut that cost down and that’s usually with the labor cost and sourcing materials yourself, recycling where you can, and planning right to build the perfect off grid shipping container home.

This is one of the best examples of a 100% off grid solar powered shipping container homes I’ve ever seen. Again, the price is a little high, and likely out of reach of most folks, however, you can save up to about 50% or more by doing most of the labor yourself, sourcing and recycling materials, and you could build something like this, comparable in size and comfort in the USA or Canada for around $150k or less.

The Cost Of Shipping Containers

Shipping container prices have risen over the year as more and more people are moving off grid and realizing the potential of a home made from shipping containers which when maintained will not only last a lifetime, are waterproof, stormproof, and earthquake proof.

You can buy shipping container for around $2500 to $3500 USD as of this writing, depending on how many you buy and where you buy them from. I’ve gotten quotes as low as $1100/each for 40′ containers, but that’s only when buying in bulk 10 or more at a time and it’s unlikely you’ll be buying that many nor will you need that many to build your shipping contain home.
